The feminism in islam workshop will cover concepts central to ethical discussions in our society that are curiously
absent in similar discussions among traditionally-oriented thought in the middle east. Such concepts include secularism, individualism,
human rights, woman's rights, individuality, and self-rule. Dr. Wishner will discuss some social and religious reasons for
these differences, with special referance to women and the family.
Janet Wishner recieved a BA from Leeds Univerisy, an MA from London University, and a Ph.D. from the University
of Georgia. She taught philosophy at Mary Washington College from 1969 to 1992, and retired to travel in the middle east and
central asia.
